'Sanjay's Super Team' Will Play Before 'The Good Dinosaur'

For the first time ever, Pixar will release two feature films in one year. The first one is Pete Docter's Inside Out, which will be in theaters on June 19. The second one is The Good Dinosaur, which is directed by Peter Sohn. The short film to play before The Good Dinosaur was revealed today by The LA Times, and it is titled Sanjay's Super Team.

Concept Art from Sanjay's Super Team

The short film is directed by Sanjay Patel, an animator who has worked at Pixar since 1996 (his first film was A Bug's Life).  Sanjay's Super Team is inspired by his real life experiences growing up with cartoons and comic books, while observing daily Hindu prayers and rituals with his father. Patel explains "My parents' whole world revolved around their gods, the Hindu deities. Our worlds were diametrically apart. I just wanted my name to be Travis, not Sanjay." This conflict was the influence for Sanjay's Super Team.
The seven-minute short begins with young Sanjay watching cartoons and eating cereal in a bland, beige room as his father jingles a bell, beckoning him to join in meditation. Reluctant and bored by the ceremony, Sanjay begins daydreaming a kind of ancient, Hindu version of The Avengers, with the gods appearing like superheroes. As the daydream progresses, the color, light and animation of the film grows increasingly dazzling and cosmic, and Sanjay grows closer to understanding his father's inner world.

Sanjay's Super Team is produced Nicole Paradis Grindle (associate producer of Toy Story 3 and Monsters University), and the score is by Mychael Danna (composer for Life of Pi). The short film will premier this year at the Annecy Film Festival and play in theaters on November 25 in front of The Good Dinosaur.

Pixar Is Developing a Pirate Movie

BREAKING: Pixar Animations Studios is currently working on a new original film, The Untitled Pixar Pirate Movie! This surprising news came from an interview with John Lasseter  this past week on NowMovies.com. Lasseter said that even though there a more sequels being made at Pixar then were were in the past, there are still several original movies in the works. He then went on to list such films: Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur, a movie about Dia de los Muertos, and a new pirate movie.

"Yarr!"

John Lasseter had more to say on the pirate movie:
"(The pirate film) follows the adventures of Spaniard pirate Lupita Sanchez, her husband Roberto, and their children as they search for a mysterious treasure. It's kind of like The Incredibles, but instead of a superhero family we have a pirate family. Lupita gets a little bored with being a pirate, and wonders if it's really all it's cracked up to be."
Lasseter also happily announced that the film would be directed by Mark Andrews (Brave) and Dan Scanlon (Monsters University), which is not normal for Pixar since they usually have one single director on a project. Nothing more was said about the movie except that they watched animated pirate films like The Pirates! Band of Misfits, The Pirate Fairy, and  Ice Age: Continental Drift for inspiration.

Some of the inspiration for the Pixar pirate movie

Because of the full schedule for upcoming Pixar movies, the earliest we'll see The Untitled Pixar Pirate Movie in theaters would mostly likely be in 2018.
