New Trailer for 'Inside Out' and Pete Docter Q&A!

The new trailer for Pixar's Inside Out has arrived!

From the Disney UK YouTube Channel

In the trailer the audience is introduced to the headquarters of not only Riley but her parents as well. We get an inside look at mom and see the five female emotions wearing red glasses and attempting to get support from her husband. Meanwhile, in Dad's headquarters, the mustachioed male emotions would rather think about a sports game. Hilarity ensues.

"Sir, reporting high levels of sass!"

Here's the official synopsis for Inside Out: Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness. The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school. The voice cast includes Amy Poehler (Joy), Bill Hader (Fear), Lewis Black (Anger), Mindy Kaling (Disgust), Phyllis Smith (Sadness), Kaitlyn Dias (Riley), Diane Lane (Riley's mom), and Kyle MacLachlan (Riley's dad).

The five emotions that live in Riley's Headquarters

Pete Docter, the director of Inside Out, did a live chat on Twitter from @PixarInsideOut's account. Here are some of the highlights from the Q&A session:

@iTunesTrailers: 'Inside Out' is all about emotions personified. Which emotion did you have the most fun bringing to life?
Pete DocterAnger. Wait, what does that say about me? Actually it's likely because Lewis Black was so great for the role.

@iTunesTrailersHow did you come up with the main character Riley, and all the emotions in her head?

Pete Docter: We did lots of research & talked to psychologists to find what emotions science has identified. (Actually there are more than 5, but we wanted to keep it simple for the film). For Riley we looked at our daughters & their friends. People think we make this stuff up. Most is real life!

@iTunesTrailers: Joy is Riley’s main emotion. Which emotion is the most significant in your mind?

Pete Docter: It’s impossible to pick one — each is important at different times. We don’t choose emotions, they choose us. But joy seems the most important to me - also the least logical. It's the hardest to define but basically joy is the reason we take risks and try new things.

@iTunesTrailers: What is your biggest challenge when directing an animated film?

Pete Docter: For this one, this world is completely new and made up — It’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. To go in the mind, we couldn't look to toy stores or universities or Scotland to make sure we got it right.

@UncleScout86: Matching voices to characters must be difficult but these characters are embodiments of emotion. Was this fun casting process?

Pete Docter: All of our actors are so perfect. We looked for actors that embodied each character and we found them!

@SebaPixar: Who will be the protagonist.  Joy or Riley?

Pete Docter: Joy is our lead.  But the film has 2 stories that interrelate, and each affects the other (another challenge).

@MicheleDNC: How did you come up with the design for the emotions physical characters?

Pete Docter: Each is based on a shape. Sadness: teardrop. Joy: star. Fear: raw nerve. Anger: fire brick. Disgust: broccoli. I actually love broccoli, by the way.

@FutureMrsKawacz  Being a big Walt Disney World fan, was any part of this movie inspired by Cranium Command?

Pete Docter: Our film takes place in the mind, not the brain (no body functions). Fun fact: I animated on Cranium Command! You can see my head in the preshow. Sad fact: Cranium Command is now closed.

@ArtisticTeaBag: What's your favorite character's design in 'Inside Out'?

Pete Docter: There are some awesome characters in Subconscious and Dream Production you haven't seen yet... just wait!

@bets_johnson: Did you base a lot of the story of this movie on your personal experiences moving from Minnesota to California?

Pete Docter: More growing up generally. In the film, moving is a metaphor for growing up.

@ColetonBryan: What is your favorite part about working in animation?

Pete Docter: Nothing you see on screen is real, yet (when done well) people laugh and cry in response. Animation is amazing!

@DrewTailored: Was it a conscious decision, after making a movie as far out as 'Up', to make something as internal as 'Inside Out'?

Pete Docter: It was more about finding another new place that people have never been before. It was amazing to travel to South America, but learning about the human mind is even more incredible. Here we got to take people somewhere that everyone has been before, but no one has ever actually seen.

@Alexlikesfun: After the film releases, are you hoping that this will benefit Kids and Adults to understand others emotions better?

Pete Docter: Being aware of how people think and interact gives you a deeper understanding of life.

The Voices Behind Riley and Her Parents in 'Inside Out' & New Details!

Pixar's upcoming feature film, Inside Out, sounds like it could be one of Pixar's most creative movies ever (and Pixar and creativity are practically synonyms). The movie takes place inside an eleven-year-old girl's mind, and she is guided by five emotions: Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), and Sadness (Phyllis Smith).

"Come on, group hug! You to Anger!"

USA Today announced that the next trailer for Inside Out will be released tomorrow (Dec. 10) and also revealed the voices of Riley (the eleven-year-old girl) and her parents. Riley is played by Kaitlyn Dias, and the parents are voiced by Diane Lane (Riley's mom) and Kyle MacLachlan (Riley's dad). Director Pete Docter proclaimed that the parents play a just as an important role in the film as Riley does.
"I started out doing a film about growing up, but it turned out it's a film about me watching my kids grow up. These parents are realizing that their kid is changing. That's difficult. But it is a part of life. They are pivotal parts, knowing how joyful this kid Riley used to be and the young woman she's changing into."
Kaitlyn Dias, Diane Lane, and Kyle MacLachlan (Images from IMDb)

Not only do we get to go inside Riley's mind (her headquarters) in Inside Out, but we get to see inside the minds of her parents as well! The Dad's headquarters a very much like a Norad missile defense site and all the emotions have mustaches. In Mom's headquarters, the emotions wear red glasses who engage in civil discussions like in ABC's show The View.
"There's our world which we're conscientious of and looking at," says Pete Docter. "So we're driving, eating dinner, whatever. And inside our head there's this whole rich internal dialogue and world no one else knows about. This film gets you inside each character's heads. We're intercutting to show what's going on inside each of their heads behind the scenes. What seems like a simple family dinner is actually fraught with all sorts of emotional angst and drama."

The "major emotion picture" arrives to theaters on June 19th, 2015.

'Finding Dory' Will Take Place At a Marine Life Institute

Pixar's general manager Jim Morris gave new information about the plot for Finding Dory at the CCXP - Comic Con Experience in Brazil today (Dec. 8). He also revealed concept art, unfinished scenes, and showed off a new software that helped create schools of fish. Here's what the movie's about (via ComicBookMovie).
The story of the movie will follow Dory, Marlin and Nemo as they set off on a journey to find about Dory's past and parents. The movie will be mainly set in the Marine Biology Institute of California, a huge complex of rehabilitation for marine life. Dory learns that she was born and raised there and was released in the ocean when she was a kid. We will see new characters, like an octopus, sea lions, a beluga whale and others.
Finding Dory Logo

It was first rumored over a year ago that Finding Dory would take place in an aquarium type attraction when The LA Times reported that Pixar directors John Lasseter and Andrew Stanton viewed the documentary Blackfish with it's director Gabriela Cowperthwaite. According to Louie Psihoyos, director of the documentary The Cove, at the end of Finding Dory some marine mammals were sent to and aquatic park- kind of like a Sea World environment. He went on to say that after seing Blackfish, a documentary that shows the injustice and problems within the sea-park industry, the Pixar directors  retooled the film so that the sea creatures now have the choice to leave that marine park. Gabriela Cowperthwaite said that Pixar employees were deeply impacted from her film, but Pixar declined to comment on the Blackfish story.

Finding Dory Concept Art

New characters for Finding Dory include Dory's parents Charlie and Jenny who will be voiced by Eugene Levy and Diane Keaton. Ty Burrell will also lend his voice to the film, he will be playing a beluga whale named Bailey. Ellen DeGeneres (Dory) and Albert Brooks (Marlin) will return for the Finding Nemo sequel as well.

"Oh boy! This is going to be good, I can tell."

Finding Dory is directed by Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, WALL-E) and will be released on June 17th, 2016.

New 'Inside Out' Posters!

Two new posters have been revealed for Pixar's next feature-length movie, Inside Out.

As you can see above, the posters are filled with the five main emotions from the movie. Director Pete Docter describes the characters as their version of the seven dwarfs. "They're really pushed caricatures and have strong personalities." Here's an excerpt from Ed Catmull's book Creativity Inc. on Pete Docter's description of the characters:

"We have our main character, an emotion called Joy (Amy Poehler), who is effervescent. She literally glows when she's excited. Then we have Fear (Bill Hader). He thinks of himself as confident and suave, but he's a little raw nerve and tends to freak out. The other characters are Anger (Lewis Black), Sadness (Phyllis Smith)--her shape is inspired by teardrops--and Disgust (Mindy Kaling), who basically turns up her nose at everything. And all these guys work at what we call Headquarters."

Gary has contributed to a lot of projects at Pixar, going all the way back to Luxo Jr. John Lasseter proclaimed that it was Rydstrom's work on Luxo Jr., such as creating the lamp's voice like the squeak of a lightbulb being screwed in,  that taught him how sound can be a partner in the storytelling of a film. Gary Rydstrom has done the sound design for numerous Pixar movies including Finding Nemo and Brave. He also has directed short films Lifted and Hawaiian Vacation.

BREAKING: 'Toy Story 4' Will Be Released In 2017

The Toy Story trilogy is the most beloved movie series on the planet. So when the third one ended so perfectly when Andy gave his toy collection to Bonnie, Pixar had decided that the Toy Story films were complete, right? Nope.

"So long, partner."

Toy Story 4 is indeed happening and it is set to be released on June 16, 2017. John Lasseter who directed the first two Toy Story movies will return and direct the fourth film. Here's Mr. Lasseter's comments on the fourth installment in the Toy Story series: “We love these characters so much; they are like family to us. We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another Toy Story movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself.” John Lasseter is referring to Andrew Stanton (director of Finding Nemo and WALL-E), Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc. and Up), and Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3). Writing duo Rashida Jones and Will McCormack are also working on Toy Story 4, and it will be produced by longtime Pixarian Galyn Susman (producer of Toy Story of TERROR!).

Image Source: De todo un poco.

There's a lot of skepticism whether this film is really needed, and that it is just being made for the money. After all, Disney's CEO Bob Iger did announce the news the same day that Disney reports their record fiscal year results. John Lasseter denies naysayers and had this to say: "A lot of people in the industry view us doing sequels as being for the business of it, but for us it's pure passion. We only make sequels when we have a story that's as good as or better than the original. We don't just, because of the success of a film, automatically say we're going to do a sequel and then figure out what we're going to do." He also told The LA Times that 'Toy Story 4' will be a love story and will pick up where 'Toy Story 3' left off, when Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the series' toy chest of characters were handed down to a little girl named Bonnie.

Toy Story 4 will be a love story?

The next Toy Story film to be released is a 22-minute holiday television special. It is called Toy Story That Time Forgot and it will air this December 2nd on ABC. The synopsis for the short film is: During a post-Christmas play date, the Toy Story gang find themselves in uncharted territory when the coolest set of action figures ever turn out to be dangerously delusional. It's all up to Trixie, the triceratops, if the gang hopes to return to Bonnie's room in this “Toy Story That Time Forgot.”

No one is safe and everyone’s a suspect until Sheriff senses an imbalance and returns home to right the “justice” that’s been served.
Mike 07 is in blue and Didi 05 is in white.
The main cars and voice cast from Radiator Springs will return in this short including two new characters: Mike 07 (voiced by Aziz Ansari) and Didi 05 (voiced by Wendi McLendon-Covey). Peter Sohn is Directing 'The Good Dinosaur'

The Good Dinosaur has certainly gone through a lot of bumps in its production. The film was originally scheduled to come out last May, but because of production troubles, the release date moved to 2015. Bob Peterson, the initial director of the movie, was withdrawn from The Good Dinosaur last year (He is now working on future projects). Pixar's Twitter page just announced that the movie's director is now Peter Sohn. Pete has worked at Pixar for a while and directed the short film Partly Cloudy. He has also voiced several Pixar characters including Emile (Ratatouille) and Squishy (Monsters University).
Watch Peter Sohn draw Arlo from The Good Dinosaur.
Here's the synopsis for the movie: 'The Good Dinosaur' asks the generations-old question: What if the cataclysmic asteroid that forever changed life on Earth actually missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? The film is a humorous and exciting original story about Arlo, a lively 70-foot-tall teenage Apatosaurus with a big heart. After a traumatic event rattles Arlo’s tranquil community, he sets out on a quest to restore peace, gaining an unlikely companion along the way—a young human boy named Spot.
Concept art from The Good Dinosaur.
The Good Dinosaur comes to theaters next year on November 25th.

Two New Images From 'Lava'

Pixar's upcoming short film, Lava, will play before Inside Out. Lava tells the story of a lonely volcano named Uku, who sings about a dream to find his true love. The short is inspired by the splendor of tropical islands and explosive appeal of volcanoes. Here are a couple new images from Lava:

As you can see, the photo-realism in Lava is astounding. Pixar always brings up their technology up to the next level with every film. Also, he turtles from the first image have a very similar resemblance to the one's from Finding Nemo!

James Ford Murphy, the director of Lava, said that he thought it would be cool to fall in love with a place who is also a character. He goes on to say: "This whole story has been an exercise in contrast. Volcanoes are so destructive, but they're so creative. They’re so powerful in their eruptions but they’re so peaceful." Watch James discuss his inspiration and ideas for the short film:

Here is a another interview James did with Collider, in which he talks about his early days at Pixar and many different aspects about the making of Lava.

Lava will premiere with Inside Out in theaters on June 19th, 2015.

'Toy Story That Time Forgot' Commercial

If you watched Toy Story of TERROR! on ABC last night (Oct. 15), chances are you would have seen a short commercial for Pixar's next television special, Toy Story That Time Forgot.

From the Pixar Post YouYube Channel.

It's not really that Christmas-y considering the fighting sock monkey and Battlesaur toys, but it sure looks like a lot of fun! We see a lot of footage with dinosaur Reptillus Maximus. IGN descibes him as a nice version of 'Beauty and the Beast's' Gaston. He's got skills, he's handsome, he's charming and witty, and he seems to have a crush on Trixie.
Here's a detailed plot synopsis of the Holiday Special (From HitFlix): When Bonnie’s friend Mason gets the latest interactive video game system for Christmas, all of his other toys fall to the wayside…including a complete set of Battlesaurs that were also part of his Christmas haul. As yet unplayed with, these armored dinosaurs have no idea they are toys…instead convinced they are a hierarchal society inhabiting a hostile planet. The half hour special stars triceratops Trixie and her quest to finally get to be a dinosaur. While Trixie (Kristen Schaal) is falling for charismatic leader Reptillus Maximus (Kevin McKidd) and Rex is finally getting the opposable thumbs he deserves, the rest of the team is sent to the Arena of Woe to await death is glorious gladiatorial battle at the hands of the Skeksis inspired Cleric.
"This seems festive!"
As mentioned in the commercial, "the battle for all toy kind begins" this December 2nd at 8|7c on ABC.
